ASEAN aviation faces fuel cost pressures, calls for stronger regional cooperation
ASEAN aviation leaders warned that fuel prices and geopolitical tensions are increasing pressure on the aviation sector, urging regional coordination, sustainable fuel adoption and digital transformation to ensure safe resilient air transport growth.
At the 53rd Meeting of the ASEAN Air Transport Working Group (ATWG 53), Deputy Minister of Construction Le Anh Tuan emphasized the need for proactive adaptation to sustain the region’s aviation growth amid rising challenges.

Vietnam’s aviation sector has maintained steady growth in recent years, contributing to enhanced regional connectivity. However, the industry is facing increasing pressure from global uncertainties, particularly geopolitical tensions in the Middle East, which have disrupted supply chains and affected international flight operations.
Volatile and rising aviation fuel prices remain a major concern, placing financial strain on airlines and the broader aviation ecosystem.
Delegates at the meeting discussed key priorities, including strengthening regional coordination, improving information sharing, and enhancing operational efficiency to ensure stable and safe air transport across ASEAN.
Deputy Minister of Construction Le Anh Tuan also called for accelerating the adoption of sustainable aviation fuel (SAF), optimizing flight operations, and promoting technological innovation to mitigate cost pressures.
In addition, ASEAN countries were urged to advance the ASEAN Single Aviation Market (ASAM), promote fair competition, and enhance both intra- and inter-regional connectivity to support long-term recovery and growth.
The meeting also highlighted the importance of digital transformation, particularly in air traffic management and performance data analysis, to improve operational capacity across the region.
"With unity, cooperation and proactive adaptation, ASEAN aviation can overcome current challenges and continue to grow in a sustainable, safe and efficient manner," the deputy minister said.
