Tokyu firms verify next-gen concrete cuts CO2 emissions by 66%

Tokyu Corporation, Tokyu Construction Co., Ltd. and Tokyo University of Science on March 31 announced the successful trial of “Hi-Producrete,” a next-generation concrete that significantly cuts CO₂ emissions and reduces labor needs in paving works.

The material was applied to paving projects beneath the elevated tracks between Hiyoshi and Tsunashima stations on the Tokyu Toyoko Line, a project that commenced on January 7.

Pilot paving with “Hi-Producrete” beneath the Tokyu Toyoko Line demonstrates a 66% reduction in CO₂ emissions and faster construction time.

The trial confirmed a 66% reduction in CO2 emissions compared to conventional cement use, while simultaneously cutting construction time by 60%.

"Hi-Producrete" is a low-carbon, labor-saving concrete jointly developed by Tokyu Construction and Tokyo University of Science. Key features include:

Resource Circulation: CO2 emissions are lowered by replacing the majority of Portland cement—the primary source of emissions in concrete—with admixtures derived from by-products and recycled materials.

Enhanced Fluidity: By increasing the material's flowability beyond that of traditional slump-managed concrete, the team achieved significant streamlining and labor reduction during the construction phase.

Moving forward, Tokyu Construction plans to investigate the actual CO2 absorption levels of the applied "Hi-Producrete" in real-world environments to calculate its lifecycle carbon balance. The validity of these calculations will be verified by Tokyo University of Science and reported to Tokyu Corporation.

Both Tokyu Corporation and Tokyu Construction expressed their commitment to advancing the "Green Transformation" (GX) of railway construction. This strategy includes the ongoing decarbonization of construction materials, heavy machinery, and fuels.
